Recommendations from Maia for November 2014.

In order to bring some more variety to my blog, I have asked some of my bookish friends to tell about the books they have in the past month, and to give us a recommendation. Today’s post is made by Maia from Holland.

Maia:

The last couple of weeks I’ve been reading several good books. I borrowed Jean Johnsons Hardship from Aurian, read Thea Harrisons Night Honor and Jennifer Ashley’s novella Scandal and the Duchess. These are all beautiful books, and it was great reading them. But I want to write about two books by Nalini Singh: Rock Addiction and Rock Courtship.

Nalini Singh is one of my top three authors. I love her Psy-Changeling series, I’m mad about her Guild Hunter books and now she started a new series! I’ve bought these as ebooks, they’re not in dead tree format (yet). Nowadays I read a lot on my iPad and even phone, so I don’t mind.

These books are featuring a band called Schoolboy Choir with Fox as the lead singer, Abe as the keyboard player, Noah as the guitarist and David as the drummer. Rock Addiction revolves around Molly, the sister of the publicist of the band, Thea, and Fox. Rock Courtship is the story of David and Thea.

Nalini is trying something different from her paranormal series, this is contemporary romance. The things I liked in these books is the relationship between Molly and Thea. They’re half-sisters and only knew of each other when they were adults. They make it work. Also the relationship between the band members, they have each other’s back, which is necessary because they all have issues.

What is liked less is Molly, she’s a 24 old virgin who wants to have a one-night stand with “a rock-god” but she doesn’t want the media attention. I can understand, knowing her background, but it sounds somewhat cheesy. I like Fox better. I’m a fan of the ‘hero in pursuit’ trope but in this story they were unevenly matched. The same trope is in Rock Courtship. David wants Thea, but she doesn’t date clients. Molly gives David a great idea to court her with memo’s. They are great. It’s a seduction of the mind.

These books are more light reading, less intense than the books in the other series. Nalini shines in her paranormal books, by creating a very complex and interesting world filled with memorable characters, male and female. All in all I liked these stories enough to be going to buy her other books in this series. Also because in these two books we get glimpses of Charlotte’s (Molly’s friend) new boss, who sounds very intriguing. And the hints we get about the relationship between Noah and Kathleen also make me want more.

Rock Addiction

A bad boy wrapped in a sexy, muscled, grown-up package might be worth a little risk…
Molly Webster has always followed the rules. After an ugly scandal tore apart her childhood and made her the focus of the media’s harsh spotlight, she vowed to live an ordinary life. No fame. No impropriety. No pain. Then she meets Zachary Fox, a tattooed bad boy rocker with a voice like whiskey and sin, and a touch that could become an addiction.
A one-night stand with the hottest rock star on the planet, that’s all it was meant to be…
Fox promises scorching heat and dangerous pleasure, coaxing Molly to extend their one-night stand into a one-month fling. After that, he’ll be gone forever, his life never again intersecting with her own. Sex and sin and sensual indulgence, all with an expiration date. No ties, no regrets. Too late, Molly realizes it isn’t only her body that’s become addicted to Fox, but her heart…

Rock Courtship

What happens when the Gentleman of Rock decides to play dirty?
A drummer for the hottest rock band on the planet, David has a single, powerful weakness: Thea, the band's publicist and the woman who steals his breath away with her every move.
Only problem is, Thea doesn't date clients--or musicians. Emotionally scarred by a cheating ex, she's not about to risk her heart with a man who has groupies buzzing around him like flies. Even if his sexy smile ties her up in knots.
What she doesn't know is that David is a one-woman man...and he's madly in love with her. David's determined to prove he's worth the risk, and willing to court her, step by exquisite step. Thea's about to discover just how long and hard this handsome drummer can play.

Aurian: Thanks for the recommendation Maia! I certainly want to read these books as I love Nalini Singh’s writing so far. And that first cover is yum!
