Shelly Laurenston – The unleashing

The first book in the Call of Crows series, published March 31, 2015.
Genre: paranormal romance
Cover: I hate hoodies

 photo 51WC7xvj0ML.SX316_zpsybsxmsm3.jpg

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn't for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even have seen her die. In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig "Vig" Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life - but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the marines. But Vig can't give up on someone as special as Kera.
With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for LA, survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera's discipline, Vig's loyalty...and the Crows' sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

I have read some disappointed reviews about this book from big fans of Shelly Laurenston’s work, and I have to agree with them. Of course you can’t compare one series to another, but something was really lacking here. And I think, it was that I just did not like the heroine. Shelly didn’t give me any reason to like her, except perhaps her age. Was I supposed to like her just because she is a veteran? A former soldier?
Well, I did not. Kera dies while trying to save a young girl, and she is turned into some kind of Immortal warrior of one of the Norse goddesses, to fight on her behalf. They are called Crows. So now Kera has to deal with a new un-life, living in a house filled with other women who seem to do nothing but pursue idle things and leisure time, and who go out killing people when their Goddess wants it.
There is a lot of senseless violence in my opinion, and not in the humorous way of her Shifter series.

And then there is Vig, a true Viking warrior, was has fallen for Kera when she was alive and working in the coffee shop. And Kera just thought he was a homeless Vet, suffering from PTSD and felt sorry for him. But now she just falls in his arms and spends a lot of time with him. And Vig tells her more about her new life, than her supposed mentor does.
Also, without knowing anything yet, Kera just tries to take over the running of the house and the Crows, by making schedules and training sessions. I did not blame the other women from getting irritated with her.
Kera took her dog with her to her new un-life, but the dog was mostly taken over by her fellow Crows, instead of spending time with Kera. Yes, the dog did have some good scenes, but not enough to rescue the book for me.

I did like the Vig part, and I liked his sister who is a Valkyrie, Vig is a weapons master and a smith, and he makes all the magical weapons for all the different clans of Warriors.

O there was a plot in there as well, where an evil Goddess comes back to Earth, manipulating a lot of people into doing her evil work for her. That was very well done, but again, me not liking the heroine at all, it was not enough for me to enjoy the book as much as I wanted to.

6 stars.

Susan Wittig Albert – Death come quickly

Book 22 in the China Bayles series, published April 1, 2014.
Genre: cozy mystery with recipes
Cover: fits the series

Death come quickly photo 51qaZ4ijgJL.SX316_zpsaaceytar.jpg

“One of the most endearing and personable amateur sleuths" (Midwest Book Review), herbalist and ex-lawyer China Bayles is back. In Death Come Quickly, a friend's murder may be the key to solving a fifteen-year-old cold case…
When China's and Ruby's friend Karen Prior is mugged in a mall parking lot and dies a few days later, China begins to suspect that her friend's death was not a random assault. Karen was a filmmaker supervising a student documentary about the fifteen-year-old murder of a woman named Christine Morris and the acquittal of the man accused of the crime. Is it possible that the same person who killed Christine Morris targeted Karen?
Delving into the cold case, China learns the motive for the first murder may be related to a valuable collection of Mexican art. Enlisting the help of her San Antonio lawyer friend Justine Wyzinski—aka the Whiz—China is determined to track down the murderer. But is she painting herself into a corner from which there's no escape?

I can’t believe this is book 22 already. I remember finding those books in my late teens in a Dutch bookshop. The first 6 were translated into Dutch, and I read those over and over. A lawyer changing her life completely, and starting a herb shop, with a friend with a new age kind of shop next door. And then the possible love interest in the form of a local cop, it was just so good. I was thrilled when I found out there were more in English, and even now the author is still writing these books, one per year. I do look forward to each new one eagerly.

But this one, was not as good as I like them. The plot was revealed on the very first page, while the murder victim is thinking about what she is doing there. In the dark and deserted employee parking lot of a big shopping mall. So I kept thinking: China, figure it out already! The why behind it all.
Still you read a cozy mystery series not only for the murder mystery part, but also for the developments in the main characters lives. What are they up to, what good and bad things are happening to them and their friends and all those secondary characters you have come to know so well over the years.
And that is why I kept reading, and why this series is so entertaining. Yes, this series will stay on my autobuy reading list for many more years to come.

Susan writes very vividly, you can feel the hot Texas sun shining on your back while reading about it, and I do wish I could taste some of those food stuffs they are eating. Of course they fry everything, but they also invent some tasty healthy dishes.
I like China’s little adopted daughter, and how much she loves her chickens, and wants to expand her little enterprise. She sells the eggs to the household and to the neighbours, as she is saving money for something important. She also helps China at the Sunday morning Farmer’s market, selling their vegetables and herbs. They still suffer from the loss of heir beloved bassett hound, Howard Costell, and all that is being described beautifully and true.

It is a good series, and if you are a fan of Texas based books, this is a series for you.

8 stars.

Ilona Andrews – Burn for me

The first book in the Hidden Legacy series, published October 28, 2014.
Genre: paranormal romance
Cover: nice
Re-read for the first time as it is a good book and I want book 2.

Burn for me photo w512855_zps38726cd4.jpg

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career - a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn't sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she's kidnapped by Connor "Mad" Rogan - a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan's after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she's getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

A new Ilona Andrews series, of course I had to read it asap. So far I have loved everything they have ever written, and this book was not the exception. I loved this new world, and especially the heroine, Nevada Baylor.

Welcome to a new world where to have magic, is to have power and wealth, and the more magic a family or House has, the more powerful they are. The big Houses all rule a certain part of town, and they usually take care of their employees and possessions.

Nevada is a private investigator in Houston, and a good one. She has taken over the agency her parents have built. Her father has died from cancer, and her mother lost her license four years ago, so now she is running the agency. Her younger siblings are part time employed on paper, and her grandmother runs an armored vehicle repair shop. She has a magical talent for armored vehicles. Nevada’s magic must stay secret though, as she is a human lie detector. The military would snatch her up in a second if it became known, and Nevada does not want to witness the horrors that her new job would bring her.
To pay for her fathers medical bills, she has mortgaged the business and everything it entails to a larger company, House Montgomery. Mostly they leave them alone as long as Nevada pays the monthly bills, but now they pressure her to take a job for them. Bring in Adam Pierce, a dangerous Prime mage, to his loving family, or lose the business, the house and everything else they own. Nevada knows it is a suicide mission, but she has no choice. There would be nothing left to start again, and she has to take care of her family.

With the help of her brother Bern, who is a computer geek, she sets out to find out everything she can about Adam Pierce. She will never be able to get him by force, he would just burn through anything she could try on him, so she has to make him come in voluntarily. And to do that, she needs to talk to him, make herself interesting to this spoiled bored rich guy who likes to burn things, and people.
He is wanted by the Houston PD for killing one of their own when he and an underage accomplice robbed a bank using magic. The fireball they left behind in the vault did a lot of damage and killed the security guard and some visitors to the bank. The video evidence is clear, Adam Pierce likes being notorious and getting attention.

Someone else is after Adam Pierce as well, another Prime Mage, Connor “Mad” Rogan, known for destroying whole cities with his power. The other kid is his nephew, when his cousin came begging for his help, he could not deny her.

When Connor spots Nevada in the biker shop he assumed she was working with Adam as his liaison, so he kidnapped her from the arboretum she met with Adam, determined to make her tell him everything she knows. But Nevada is stronger than she knows, and she resists his magic. She refuses to give in, and break her clients’ confidentiality. When she breaks his spell and almost dies in the process, Mad Rogan takes her home, to her big surprise. He could have just killed her, for a mass murderer that would not be difficult.

The next day he demands she meets him for lunch, to discuss Adam Pierce. Nevada doesn’t trust him, but she knows she needs his help and his resources to have even a little chance of bringing in Pierce alive, before the cops find and shoot him on sight. But Adam is not working alone, he is being protected by a whole team of mages, someone else is behind everything that is happening, but who, and why?

And so Nevada finds herself being a person of interest for two dangerous Prime Mages, and she knows she can trust neither. Adam is a dangerous psychopath, and Mad Rogan is too dangerous and too far out of her league as well. Even though she is attracted to him, she won’t act on it. She has her own life, her business and her family to take care of.

I loved this book. Nevada is such a great and strong heroine. She is capable of a lot of things, even though her magic is not so powerful. She is good at her job, and she makes the tough decisions without whining. Being a human lie detector, she is as honest as possible, and not afraid to speak her mind against more powerful mages.

The world building is great. 200 Years ago the Osiris serum awakened magic abilities in human beings, but there are drawbacks as well, and Ilona Andrews shows those too. Like the creatures living in the Pit, the drowned part of the city. And when the magic loses strength in a family line, that House looses power. Breeding and marrying into the right bloodlines became so very important; a marriage of love is a rare thing, especially in the most powerful Houses. And where there is no love, there is little empathy for people with less magic and power.

The personal background on Nevada, Adam and Connor are told in little bits and pieces, making them come to life on the pages, and give us some understanding why they are who they are. Adam is just a bad apple, feeling entitled to whatever he wants but Connor is certainly an intriguing character.

I would love to read more books in this series, I want to know what happens next, who is behind it all, but most of all, I want Connor to become more human and fall in love with Nevada.

I enjoyed Nevada’s family; they are great characters, especially her grandmother and mother. They do have her back when needed, but have their own opinions as well.

10 stars.

Jude Deveraux – True Love

The first book in the Nantucket Brides Trilogy series, published July 9, 2013.
Genre: contemporary romance with a ghost
Cover: meh, but the roses are pretty.

 photo 51KIBg-n9SL.SX316_zpsw2cgupse.jpg

Just as Alix Madsen is finishing architecture school, Adelaide Kingsley dies and wills her, for one year, the use of a charming nineteenth-century Nantucked House. The elderly woman’s connection to the Madsen family is a mystery to Alix, who accepts the quirky bequest, in part so she can plan her best friend’s storybook wedding. But Adelaide had a specific task for Alix: to solve the strange disappearance of one of the Kingsley women more than two centuries ago. If that wasn’t troubling enough, Alix must contend with the arrogant (and extremely good-looking) architect, Jared Montgomery. The chemistry between them is undeniable. But Jared harbors secrets, which, if revealed, may drive a wedge between the pair. With a glorious Nantucket wedding on the horizon, sparks fly, and ghosts reveal themselves – some of them literally. Finding their lives entwined with the turbulent fortunes of their ancestors, Alix and Jared discover that only by righting the wrongs of the past can they hope to be together.

Another author whose books I have been reading since my early teens is Jude Deveraux. Who hasn’t read and fallen in love with one of her historical Montgomery or Taggert heroes? This series takes place in Nantucket, and I would certainly love to wander around there someday.

Alix Madsen is a young architect, with lots of talent and a great future ahead of her. She is working on her final piece for her degree, but first she will spend a year on Nantucket. A woman she doesn’t know has left her the use of her house for a year, and a task to complete. But when Alix finds out that the house should belong to her idol, the famous architect Jared Montgomery Kingsley the Seventh, all she can think about is impressing him, so he will hire her as an associate to his firm in New York.
When she finally meets Jared and he pretends to be just Mr. Kingsley, she is severely disappointed. Of course she knows him on sight; she has been studying his work and has been to one of his lectures. So when her father finds out, he interferes for her, and makes Jared apologize and make up for it. Alix doesn’t know that both her parents have been frequent guests on the island, and are very well acquainted with Jared and his family. Her mother is a famous romance author, and she has been spending a month each summer in this very same house, reading Jared’s family’s journals, and plotting her books around those stories. Her father is a good architect and builder as well, and he was the one who thought Jared all he knows, and put him on the path to become an architect, with Alix’ mother financing it all.

Still, Jared really liked Alix, and he doesn’t mind after all to show her around and introduce her to his family and favourite places to be. And when they start working together on some of his designs, a slow romance is born. While Alix is staying in the house, Jared is staying in the guesthouse, as he has been doing for many years.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I did like Alix and some other characters a lot. Alix is honest and she works hard, and is not afraid to try anything. She is trying to put together a lovely wedding for her best friend, who is being terrorized by both her own mother as her future mother-in-law who completely take over the planning according to their own wishes.
What I really did not like, was that everyone kept secrets from Alix, for no apparent reasons. I simply don’t get why she could not know that both her parents (who are divorced) spend a lot of time on Nantucket Island, and what they did there. And then Jared, who is keeping the ghost of his great-great-grandfather a secret as well, and who is very jealous of the ghost, especially when Alix finally sees him and spends a little time with him. I thought it ridiculous how he whisked her out of the house, and refuses to talk about anything she discovered.

I had hoped for more searching for the secret of the disappearance of Valentina, and how Alix discovers something in the papers in the attick. But most time the focus was on Jared, and how he was feeling.

So the book was a little off for me. Still, Jude’s writing style kept me reading, but everything that happened kept me from really falling for this couple and enjoying their romance. The good thing is, there are many secondary characters in this book whom I want to know more about and perhaps see them finding their significant other. I still look forward to reading the second book in this series. I am guessing on a Taggert hero, who is also the crown prince of Lanconia … so this will be very interesting.

Recommendations from Freya for August 2015.

In order to bring some more variety to my blog, I have asked some of my bookish friends to tell about the books they have in the past month, and to give us a recommendation. Today’s post is made by Freya from Holland.

Freya:

Last month I haven’t been reading much of new books. I was too busy playing with all my new books that Aurian brought with her from Berlin. After a gruelling journey through almost 40C weather, travelling for more than eight hours Aurian and het boyfriend Peter brought back about 1300 books (!) to Utrecht.

In several sessions we went through the pile of all those books. I took about 300 of them, Aurian roughly 400. Then these books had to be sorted into my bookshelves (of course!). That took two afternoons. And then I helped to sort Aurian’s, that took two days!!

The 300 books are mostly books of known authors, adding to series, and some new for me authors that looked interesting. There were books by Cherry Adair, Victoria Alexander, Jo Beverley, Suzanne Brockmann, Jennifer Crusie, Lydia Dare, Christina Dodd, Cynthia Eden, Lorraine Heath, Elizabeth Hoyt, Eloisa James, Donna Kauffman, Lora Leigh, Julia London, Susan Mallery, Catherine Mann, Cheyenne McCray, Lynsay Sands, Christina Skye, Sherry Thomas, Diana Whiteside, etc., etc. A lot of them were signed, mostly to the original owner, but still. All those lovely new books!!!!
But the most squee-worthy books were a signed book by JAK writing as Jayne Castle (iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii) and an anthology with a J.D. Robb signature (double iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii).

That left us with a pile of something like 700 books to sort through. I took them to my home to organise, sort and make a list. I have a excel sheet with all my books, organised by author, publication year and other information. And my bookshelves are organised by writer, series and printdate. I’m a bit neurotic like that. ;-)
Of the superfluous books I made a list of author, title and if they were an ARC/autographed. We have some friends who will like them. So you can see why I didn’t have much reading time, this month.

Kat photo Kat_zpsoffpsevd.png

I did do some reading. I read The trouble with Valentines by Kelly Hunter, a great book, I devoured it in one evening. Just as I did the latest Jayne Castle book, Siren’s call. I highly recommend both. I also want to recommend the Twelve Kingdoms trilogy by Jeffe Kennedy. I’ve read and enjoyed the first book The Mark of the Tala, I’m currently reading book two Tears of the Rose. It’s a tale of a woman discovering her inner strength with a Beauty and Beast trope added to the mix! The best thing is, I won number three, The Talon of the Hawk, I’ll be reading that one soon!

 photo boekenkast Freya_zpsjsser7gl.png

So now I have more books to read, all sorted and stacked in my bookcase. I have in the region of 2500 books, with only a third read, to enjoy. I love how it looks in my living room!

Freya photo Freya 2_zpseia5fuhr.jpg

Aurian: Thanks for the recommendation Freya! I will try to read some Jeffe Kennedy as well, as our good friend Sullivan McPig is a big fan as well.
And I do hope this was the last time this year we will be shuffling all our books around ;)

Christine Feehan – Viper Game

Book 11 in the GhostWalker series, published January 27, 2015.
Genre: paranormal romance/romantic suspense
Cover: My book has the smaller cover, which I prefer, as there are no real snakes in this book at all.

Viper Game photo 51U1VXPI4cL.SX316_zpscnolqt09.jpg photo 51LfJi1SqHL._SL160__zpsj447dxhr.jpg

GhostWalker Wyatt Fontaine knows the price he paid for the secret military experiment that gave him his special catlike abilities. After all, he left his bayou home a healer and came back a killer. While Wyatt and his GhostWalker brother Gator may have known exactly the sort of game they were going into, Wyatt never anticipated where it would lead – or to whom.
The swamps held many mysteries, but few are as sinuously seductive as Le Poivre. The woman the locals call Pepper is every bit as enigmatic as the three little girls she’s desperately trying to protect. From what, Wyatt is soon to discover. Right now Pepper needs a man like Wyatt. Passionately. But her secrets are about to take them both deeper into the bayou than either imagined – where desire is the deadliest poison of all.

It’s been almost three years since I read the last GhostWalker book, but I was back into the storyline in just a few sentences. Welcome to a world where a sociopathic evil genius scientist changed soldiers into supersoldiers, not only enhancing their latent psychic powers (what they signed up for), but also crossing their DNA with animal DNA. And other scary things …
So if you think, o another genetic altered soldier story, you are right. But Christine Feehan’s first book in this series was published in 2003, so keep in mind that this was (one of) the first series with this topic. And in my opinion, one of the best. Especially the earlier books.

When Wyatt’s grandmother calls him to come home, as there are some strange things happening in the bayou, he brings some of his friends with him. They have been ambushed recently and they are all recovering from their wounds. But if his grandmother needs him home, he will be there as soon as possible.
So when he finds out that some security guard to a factory building in the swamp has harassed his grandmother while she was harvesting the herbs and plants for her medicine, he has to teach that guard a lesson in manners. Because no one harms his grandmother! She took him and his brothers in when their parents died, and raised them. They were not rich, and it was hard work to keep them all fed and clothed and educated, but she did it with love.

When Wyatt finds out that the building was once owned by Whitney, he is immediately suspicious. Especially when he meets a woman who has escaped the place with a little girl in tow. She is like him, a GhostWalker, even though she denies it. She is just a reject, a failed experiment, while he is a true soldier. Because Whitney did not just experiment with mature soldiers, whom sort of consented to it, he also experimented on little girls he bought from orphanages, or just made an orphan. They had no choice, no say in whatever happened to him. And he also paired them together, biochemically. Something that has made for some great couples lately. But Wyatt’s counterpart is poisonous, literally. She was created to seduce and kill, but she refused to do it, even though she was in heat constantly, and that earned her a place on the list to be eliminated. Along with three littly baby girls, who are literally vipers.
So when Wyatt finally gives in to the knowledge that Pepper is created just for him, that he can cool her fire, he is determined to keep her for himself. And to rescue the other two little girls that were left behind in that place. But first, he will need more of his friends to turn his grandmothers’ home into a fortress…

I do love this series, but Wyatt is certainly very highhanded. He doesn’t give Pepper much of a choice to figure out living on her own, when she has lived in captivity most of her life. Also, the heroines in this series are often much more kick ass, for me Pepper was a bit too docile. Wyatt kept her under his thumb most of the book, and she did not show much spirit. I like equal couples a lot better. Yes, she did fight and kill when necessary to protect her loved ones, but she did not enjoy doing it.
Also the plot is not getting much further either, Dr Whitney only plays a part in the end of the book, and I would really like the teams to close in on him, or for him to make a move on one of the babies he so desperately wants.
There was a lot of talking and sex scenes and too little action for me. But I am very much intrigued by Wyatt’s team members, one of whom can literally walk through walls, and who encountered a woman who was made into a Black Widow spider. That relationship sure looks promising as this man is totally not capable to casually interact with other people but also brilliant and extremely rich.

So, while I did enjoy this story, I did not love it, but I do want to read the next book.

6 stars.
