Stephanie Laurens – The taming of Ryder Cavanaugh

The fifth book in the Cynster Sisters series, published June 25, 2013.
Genre: historical romance
Cover: my book has the second cover, which I prefer. Although she does not look like the heroine in this book.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens returns with the next in her Cynster Sisters series . . .

The Honorable Miss Mary Cynster always gets what she wants. As the last unwed Cynster of her generation, she is determined to remain in charge of her life and of the man she will marry. At the very bottom of her list of potential husbands is Ryder Cavanaugh, the daring and devastating Marquess of Raventhorne, an overwhelming and utterly unmanageable lion of the ton. But destiny has a different plan.
Ryder needs Mary as his wife, not just because she is delightful, fiery, and tempting, but because he values all she could be. When fate and circumstance hand him the chance, he claims Mary as his marchioness . . . only to discover what he truly desires is not just to take her hand in marriage, but to capture her heart.

For now, the last of the Cynster books, as it will take some years before the next generation is ready to be married. I was looking forward to this one, and not disappointed in the least. Even when I thought the book would become predictable, it did not, Stephanie Laurens gave her own twists to some common tropes.

Finally it is time for Mary Cynster to find her own true hero. Of course, organized as she is, she has already selected him herself; she just needs the Lady’s necklace to confirm her choice. And she needs the infuriating Ryder Cavanaugh to leave her alone, while she focuses on his younger half brother Randolph. Mary wants a man she can manage, so she can lead her own life, and not be subject to the alpha tendencies like those of her male relatives, and the husbands of her sisters and cousins. And Randolph comes from one of the oldest families in the realm, just like the Cynsters are, so this will be a perfect match.

Ryder certainly is not used to getting dismissed like this tiny girl just did. He is one of the acknowledged lions of the ton, a rake, but he knows it is time he is married and start his own family. And he wants to find his own bride before the matchmaking ladies of the ton decide it is time as well, and throw their daughters, friends’ and relatives’ daughters at him at every opportunity. And now Mary Cynster has caught his eye. He likes her, and has known her from a distance for some years now, and she is the last of her generation. The last chance for many families to make an alliance with the mighty Cynster clan. With Henriette just getting engaged, the focus is not yet on Mary, but it will be soon.

When Ryder finds out that Mary has set her sights on Randolph, he tells her that Randolph is all wrong for her, he is not mature enough yet, and she just scares him. Mary does not believe him of course, but observation sure makes him right. So now she has to find someone else. Ryder tries to help her, with telling her details about the men she seems interested in, and in the mean time securing a place by her side for most of the time. And he does manage to claim a waltz with her every time, ensuring she is not immune to him after all. Yes, Mary is attracted to Ryder, but she certainly does not consider him husband material. He is way too arrogant and managing himself, she will not be able to set him to her hand. But Ryder manages to surprise her, by telling her that as his wife, he would give her a lot of leeway, and not always dictate to her.

Before she can digest that tempting bit, on her way home with her parents’ carriage, Mary sees Ryder (who always went home on foot, as it is faster, and who would dare attack a man as huge as he is), stumble out of an alley and collapse. She makes the carriage stop, and runs to his side. Handling things as quickly and efficiently as she is used to, Mary literally saves his life with putting pressure on the wound in his side, while her servants fetch his to take him home. The doctor sews him back together, but the fact that he stays unconscious, is not good. Mary is determined to stay at his side, not willing to let him die without her ever having the chance to contemplate marriage to him for real. She will bully him back to life if she must. Sending of a note to her parents about her whereabouts, she makes her self comfortable for her vigil. As Ryder has the constitution of an ox, and he heals fast, he does regain consciousness a few hours later, and is happily surprised to see Mary next to his bed.

So when early the next morning the doorbell rings, she is convinced it is her parents, coming to check up on her. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Ryder’s stepmother, who hates and loathes him, has come for a visit with two of the biggest gossips of London in her wake. And when she spots Mary on the stairs, she rudely barges into Ryder’s bedroom to confront them.
Ryder hides being wounded very well, and tells her that Mary is his fiancée. Mary knows it is the only solution possible to avoid a scandal, and that they have no other choice, so she is very reasonable about it all. Ryder has already made clear to her that he wants her as his wife, she just wanted some time to get to know each other better, before she made her decision. And now it is out of her hands.

And so, after a quick courtship and wedding between two very powerful characters, they are off to his country seat to enjoy their honeymoon, and for Mary to get used to the part of being a Marchioness. And to make her husband truly love her, as Cynsters always marry for love. But danger follows them to the country, where this time it is Mary who is targeted time and again. Ryder really does not have a clue who wants him and Mary dead, he cannot believe his stepmother or half siblings have anything to do with this. Even the Cynsters and their relatives and allies cannot find anything about who is behind this all.

From the first, I liked Mary. She is a very sensible and decisive young lady, used to taking the reigns and organizing whatever needs organizing. She knows she has little chance of that with Ryder, as he is way too much like her, but there is that powerful attraction between them, and he is the first man she came across when she wore the Ladies’ necklace for the first time. How can she find out if he is her true hero after all? Still, all the signs seem to point at him.
Ryder longs for a family of his own, and a better bond with his half siblings, something that is not really possible with his stepmother hating him so much. He envies the Cynsters their family life and really wants that for himself and his family. So in that part, he makes a good choice with Mary, she knows how to be part of a large and loving family. She also entertains him and he finds himself having conversations with her about a lot of different topics, she is really smart as well as beautiful.

I liked both Mary and Ryder, I thought Ryder would be more controlling and alpha, but he was not. He gave Mary the time and space she needs, and did not set about seducing her to make her see reason, as happens so often in historical romances. Instead, it was Mary who came to his bed in the middle of the night and would not take no for an answer.

I have to admit, I did have to look up a few words in the google dictionary. Stephanie Laurens does have a wonderful way with words but she does not use short and easy ones. Her books contain a lot of dialogue, both internally and face to face, and she has a very distinctive writing style. I would recognize her writing anytime. I have been a fan of her books for over 25 years now, and I hope to be able to read them for at least 25 years more. A few books ago, I was getting bored with the Black Cobra books as they were too similar in my opinion, but with the Cynster Sisters, she totally made them fresh again.

As an epilogue, the whole extended family is together, and it was fun to see them interact, and to meet all their many children. There sure are some hellions to watch out for in future books! I am looking forward to her new series.

9 stars.

Heather Webber – Deeply, desperately

The second book in the Lucy Valentine series, published August 3, 2010.
Genre: psychic cozy mystery
Cover: lovely

Deeply, Desperately photo n352042_zpsde1efc86.jpg

The irrepressible star of Truly, Madly, is back in business. This time, Lucy Valentine will go to the ends of the earth to find true love for her clients...and maybe even herself.

Lucy wants to breathe new life into her family's Boston-based matchmaking company. But how? Even though she comes from a long line of ancestors blessed by Cupid with psychic abilities, a freak accident left Lucy with only one special skill: finding things. Car keys, socks in the dryer, needles in haystacks...and now, in a stroke of professional genius, lost loves!

It's not long before Lucy's on a winning streak, helping old flames reunite and create new sparks. Business is booming. But when Lucy finds herself involved in a possible case of murder, she realizes she's in too deep. Enter Sean Donahue. Lucy's handsome fire-fighter turned private-eye neighbor, Sean is just the man she needs to help her on the job. Could he also be the man she's been looking for all along? When it comes to Valentine, Inc., falling in love is always serious business...

I love the first book in this series, but I loved this one even more. Lucy is now more secure in her “powers” and she two cases to solve. One is an old man who is looking for the woman who was the love of his life before he went to war, and the second is a missing person’s case. The woman’s mother is convinced her daughters’ husband killed her daughter, and abused their children, keeping her daughter from having much contact with her since their marriage. And as the husband is a police officer, he has more than enough knowledge to get rid of the body without anyone ever finding it. But the mother needs closure, and when Lucy concentrate on the bracelet the missing woman never removed, she sees another girl wearing it. So, if Sarah Loehman is dead, how come this girl is wearing her bracelet?

The downside of the first case is the presence of Preston Bailey, the reporter who exposed Lucy and her gifts to the world a few weeks ago. Her father promised Preston she could be present during Lucy’s Lost Love cases, and write a human interest piece for the newspaper for it.
Leo’s dog tags were found in a mass grave and so his family was notified that he was deceased. But Leo survived being a prisoner of war, and came home. Only to learn that his beloved had married someone else two years ago, and moved away. He himself learned to love and married another woman, but Leo has been a widower for a few years now, and he wants to find his first love, whom he has never forgotten. But he doesn’t even know if she is still alive.
The visions Lucy sees from his old class ring, lead Lucy and Preston to an antique shop, and from there to a really nice lawyer.

Lucy was hoping that Sean would be with her every step of both investigations, as he is the private investigator she is in love with. (If she dares to believe in love despite the Cupid Curse on her family), but unfortunately, his ex-girlfriend is monopolizing his time. Claiming she is very ill, and that she needs someone to go to the hospital with her, and take care of her. And being the honourable man he is, Sean cannot refuse Claire. But he really wants to be with Lucy, and he tries be see her in between as much as he can. Will Lucy fight for her man? Or just give in to the curse?

And then Lucy’s father is behaving secretively again, does he have another woman in his sights already? Did he not learn anything from the beach debacle and scandal in the previous book? Lucy really cannot let it be, she needs to find out the truth…

And Marisol is urging Lucy to help investigate Em’s fiancĂ©e. She never liked him, and she really does not want Em to marry him in two weeks. They both think she would really suit Aidan instead, the police detective that gives her the missing persons cases to work on. Will they be able to open Em’s eyes? Or is it true love between them after all?

I really loved this book. It is very well written, and I just love the characters. The stories that Lucy investigates tug on your heart strings, and you hope she will be able to solve it all. Like in the first book, this one had a surprising twist in the ending, though I did suspect a little of it already. I am very happy with how this book ended, and am looking forward to the next one. I want to know if Preston and the other new character will be a part of the series.

9,5 stars.

One question for Suzanne Johnson / Susannah Sandlin

As you perhaps already know, I am a big fan of Suzanne Johnson’s Sentinels of New Orleans series, a great urban fantasy series taking place in and around New Orleans. I have also read the first book in the Penton Vampire Legacy series, which is paranormal romance written by her alter ego Susannah Sandlin.

I am very much looking forward to reading the third Sentinel book, Elysian Fields, and am very happy that Suzanne promised me an ARC. The book will be published on August 13. Susannah has also recently written a serial novel called Storm Force, the first book in the Omega Force series. The book is now available in paper as well as ebook as it is finished, and I am looking forward to reading that one.

Elysian Fields, the third book in the Sentinals of New Orleans series, to be published August 13, 2013.

Elysian Fields photo n413873_zps6c2766ed.jpg
Elysian Fields by Suzanne Johnson is the fun, fast-paced third book in the Sentinels of New Orleans, a series of urban fantasy novels filled with wizards, mermen, and pirates. In the tradition of the Sookie Stackhouse books, these novels are perfect for readers of paranormal fiction and "fans of Charlaine Harris and Cat Adams." (Booklist)

The mer feud has been settled, but life in South Louisiana still has more twists and turns than the muddy Mississippi.

New Orleanians are under attack from a copycat killer mimicking the crimes of a 1918 serial murderer known as the Axeman of New Orleans. Thanks to a tip from the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, DJ Jaco knows the attacks aren't random - an unknown necromancer has resurrected the original Axeman of New Orleans, and his ultimate target is a certain blonde wizard. Namely, DJ.

Combating an undead serial killer as troubles pile up around her isn't easy. Jake Warin's loup-garou nature is spiralling downward, enigmatic neighbour Quince Randolph is acting weirder than ever, the Elders are insisting on lessons in elven magic from the world's most annoying wizard, and former partner Alex Warin just turned up on DJ's to-do list. Not to mention big manoeuvres are afoot in the halls of preternatural power.

Suddenly, moving to the Beyond as Jean Lafitte's pirate wench could be DJ's best option.

Suzanne keeps her readers nicely updated on what is happening in her world on her daily blog, Preternatura (where she has a lot of giveaways!), but I would like her to tell us herself what she is planning and plotting for the future.

Aurian: Hi Suzanne, can you please tell me and my readers what your plans are? How many books have you planned in the Sentinels of New Orleans series? Do you know some more details about the short story Jackson Square yet (that was a nice free read on Suzanne’s website a few weeks ago). And what are your alter ego’s plans?

Suzanne: Hi Aurian—thanks for having me here today! Wow…that’s one big question : )

Let’s see. There will be at least five books in the Sentinels of New Orleans series; I recently signed on with Tor Books for two more. The fourth book is tentatively titled PIRATE’S ALLEY and the fifth, BELLE CHASSE. (All of the book titles are well-known streets in New Orleans, but have some relation to the plot.) One, if not both, of them will be out in 2014, but I don’t yet know publication dates. It’s a little too early. After that, it all depends on how the books sell. The worldbuilding is certainly big enough to support a long series, but we’ll see how fresh it still feels after two more books. It’s still a lot of fun to write, and I can’t wait to really dig into the fourth one.

The novelette “Jackson Square” I hope to have out as an inexpensive digital download around the first of September. I’d hoped to do it earlier but life had other plans! I am working on some bonus content that will be paired with it—Jean Lafitte’s account of the Battle of New Orleans, which is mentioned in the story, and perhaps a short essay on what we do and don’t know about the real pirate Jean Lafitte. He was a fascinating and complex man.

Ah, my alter ego! As Susannah Sandlin, I am working on a fourth book in the Penton Vampire Legacy series, called DELIVERANCE. I don’t yet know whether that one will come out through my publisher or if I’ll put it out myself. I also have a proposal in for a second book featuring the characters from STORM FORCE and a new project that would be more of a thriller involving salvage diving and the Knights Templar.

So things are hopping in my household! I’m trying to figure out how to add more hours to my day : )

Laurell K. Hamilton – Affliction

Book 22 in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, published July 2, 2013.
Genre: urban fantasy
Cover: bleh. I prefer the UK-cover.

Affliction photo n410590_zps44c6398a.jpg photo 9780755389032_zpsc241556f.jpg

Some zombies are raised. Others must be put down. Just ask Anita Blake.
Before now, she would have considered them merely off-putting, never dangerous. Before now, she had never heard of any of them causing human beings to perish in agony. But that's all changed.

Micah's estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”
Anita makes her living off of zombies but these aren't the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes.

Where will it stop?
Even Anita Blake doesn't know.

Anita is busy with her job at the animators firm, when she gets a phone call from a very distressed woman, who claims to be her lovers’ mother. Micah’s father is deadly wounded by a zombie, and is in the hospital. Rush wants to say goodbye to his son, as he knows he is dying. When Micah was changed into a wereleopard he had to keep his family safe from Chimera by pretending that he did not love them at all, and he had to say some horrible things to them to break up with them. But somehow Rush has found it that it was for their own protection, and now he wants to make up.
Of course Micah wants to see his dad, and his family one last time, and Anita and Nathaniel make the arrangements to leave. But as Jean-Claude just became the head of the new American Vampire Council, she will have to take in account vampire and shape shifter politics, and they will have to bring enough bodyguards with them as well. It is not easy, incorporating the leftover Harlequin into their bodyguards, but Anita will have to be able to trust them to guard her, and her lovers.

First, they meet one of Micah’s cousins, who waits for them at the airport, to bring them to the hospital, as is one of the Denver’s Master of the City vampires. So divided over two vehicles they drive to the hospital, where Micah is met by his aunt and uncle, who are religious zealots and despise him. They even try to have the police kill him, when his aunt yells that he is changing because of his eyes. Lucky for Micah, the police was already notified that his eyes can’t change back to human. His dad has been the local sheriff for many years, and the police of all flavors are holding a vigil at the hospital. This is customary when one of their own is hurt on the job. Some of them remember Micah, and are nice, but some have heard all the gossip about Anita and already hate her for being whom she is.
Luckily, the other family members are a lot nicer, and his closest family is very happy to see Micah again. Only his brother needs some persuading first, but the love between them is still there.

Anita just needs to know what has happened to Rush. A flesh eating zombie is very rare, and she has never come across one that infects his victims. She just has to know everything that happens. The doctor and some of the policemen really want her input, but some other policemen do not want to give the case away to the feds. Still, they are outvoted and Anita is welcome to see the other bodies, and read the reports. As a preternatural marshal, she can step in where she wants, but that will only make the locals un-cooperative.

While Micah stays in the hospital with his family, Anita goes out with some of their bodyguards to find some missing persons. The search dogs just kind of lost the trail, but Nathaniel in leopard form will be able to find them. The first victim is found dead, partly eaten by zombies, which is also not usual for a zombie attack. But if they hurry, they should be able to find the second victim in time. And they do, but they sure have to fight hard for him. Ares, one of the bodyguards is bitten badly, and Anita wants him on the first copter back to the hospital. The medic refuses at first, thinking that as a shape shifter, Ares will heal fast enough, but Ares is not healing. Wounds inflicted by another preternatural heal humanly slow, if at all. But when they are finally allowed in the tiny helicopter, something goes wrong. The vampire Anita sensed earlier, is trying to make Ares shift and attack them all. There is no way for the helicopter to land safely right now, Anita will have to kill him if he shifts on board. But on the ground, Ares escapes and runs to attack a women, while her children are watching, and Anita has no other choice but to kill him, while she herself is badly hurt as well. And to make things worse, a tv station helicopter has seen and taped it all, and she ends up on national television.

This is not altogether a bad thing, because when she wakes up in the hospital, Edward is there. Chiding her for not inviting him to this zombie apocalypse. And Jean-Claude has also come to Denver to be with her.
The bad news is, another marshal has been put in charge of the case, and she has not the experience of Anita or Edward/Ted, and she thought the zombies and vampires dead. So they were shipped to the morgue, in the hospital …
When the morgue staff does not answer their phone, they know it is bad news, and hurry back to the hospital to evacuate it all. But they are too late, there are already zombie attacks reported on different floors. They will have to do their best to contain them in the basement and kill them on the spot. Finally Edward can use his European grenades, those are highly illegal in the US but very effective.

Anita will have to find this master vampire and kill him, before he creates more killer zombies and new vampires for his undead army and kills everyone in town.

I absolutely loved this book; I started reading it on Sunday afternoon, and did not stop before it was finished, in the middle of the night. Laurell K. Hamilton has created an amazing story again, it was good. The fight against these zombies and vampires, which was quite scary at times as I hate zombies, was so very well written. As always I love the parts with Edward, and his interaction with Anita and Nicky.
Anita’s harem of men seems to be complete, there are no new lovers introduced. She is even getting engaged for real this time! I so loved that scene, and I am curious to find out how they are going to fix it all.
Nicky, Anita’s lion-Bride, plays a big part in this book, and I really like him. Sure, he is a psychopath and admits it, but Anita is his conscience. And in turn, he tells Anita the truth about what she needs to know, things she has been ignoring. I also loved how Micah presents both Anita and Nathaniel as his lovers, they have been living together for three years now, and they work like that.

The private pieces of Anita’s life were good to read about, I enjoy that a lot, but the plot, the story, the action, that was amazing. Even with this, the 22nd book in the series, it is still fresh and evolving and I can’t wait for the next book.
And for you who want to know, sure there are some hot love scenes in this book, one with Nicky and Nathaniel that went too far for my tastes (don’t try it at home folks!), but a lot less than I am used to in the previous books.

10 stars.

Jean Johnson – The Mage

The eighth book in the Sons of Destiny series, published April 7, 2009.
Genre: fantasy romance
Cover: nice

The Mage photo n274711_zps46f171d5.jpg

Eight brothers, born in four sets of twins, two years apart to the day – they fulfill the Curse of Eight Prophecy. Though no longer trapped in exile, their growing family faces new problems. The worst of those problems now fall upon the last of the Sons of Destiny …

Hope, Morganen’s foretold bride, has finally arrived. But she hasn’t been entirely truthful about herself, and the consequences will stretch further than even she anticipates. Just as Morg gets used to Hope’s revelation, new enemies arrive on the Isle, seeking to steal away the brothers’ chance at creating a new nation. During the attack, an old foe resurfaces and strikes amid the confusion, kidnapping the final bride-to-be.
Either Morg will rescue Hope and help his family complete the Prophecies of the Seer Draganna and the last Duchess of Nightfall, carving out a new kingdom in the process … or their enemies will be free to slaughter them all…

This last book in the series is really filled with action. Hope has finally come to Nightfall, and now she reveals that she is the former Duches Haupeana, who was sent through time and space twohundred years ago at the shattering of Aiar. Morganen is not happy that she kept this secret from him, and he decides Hope needs to court him now, to win back his trust. For Hope only 5 years have passed, living the life of another woman on Earth, magicless. But she did make a new life for herself, and has no intention whatsoever to take over the rule of Nightfall Island from Kelly. She never wanted to be the Duchess in the first place, she was/is a Seer, and she loves her Goddess. Hope did bring back a lot of stuff with her though, she plans to become the first chocolatier in this world, if the cacao plants she had Morganen plant for her, will survive here.

Bad mages are still trying to steal the Living Fountain, which means it has to be extracted from Rora soon, so she will be safe. Something Rydan really does not want to happen as Rora needs to die for that. But the priestess/darkhana witch Ora promises to keep her safe. They also need the second fountain to open the Convocation of the Gods, so it can not be allowed to “grow roots” someone will have to keep moving it around the Underground caves and hallways at all times. Which means the brothers and their wives are all getting shifts doing nothing but “walking the dog”. Or rather, the crystal filled with the Fountain’s power.

So when enemies infiltrate the island, their time is up, and things need to start happening. But then Duke Finneg kidnaps Hope, Morganen’s Bride to be, and Morganen has no choice but to go to Katan and ask the King and Council for help recovering his bride, and punishing Finneg. When the King refuses, and orders an attack on Morganen, he will regret it, as Morganen is more powerful than the King and all his mages together. And Katan is traditionally ruled by the most powerful mage of all… This means that Morganen suddenly is the King of Katan, a job he never wanted, but can use to make the council do his bidding. He has to find Duke Finneg and Hope, before something bad happens to Hope. Somehow Finneg has hidden her from his sight.

The Convocation of the Gods was very impressive to read about, and fun as well, when Kelly has to call them all into being, and invite them to sit down. She even has to fight and conquer one! And when that has all been done, finally, the time starts for the requests. For all the gods who are worshipped on this world, one or two of their priests/priestesses had to be brought over, so they can talk to and petition their gods for favors in person. And with over 300 gods and goddesses, this will take weeks.

It was a good last book in the series, everything is going fine on the island, and Dominor and Serina are the proud parents of newborn twins. Jean Johnson told me, if I want some more Koranen and Danau, I will have to read “Bedtime Stories, a collection of erotic fairy tales”. I do have the book, but have not read it.

I liked Morganen and Hope together; they have been courting for months now through the mirror, only able to communicate in writing. But with this new secret, Morganen wants to be courted by Hope, which she does with chocolate. And although they do agree to go slowly, they just can’t stay away from the other. So, even though this book is filled with action and lots of other characters, there is time for some hot love scenes, with chocolate and other foodstuffs involved …

When Hope is kidnapped, Morganen does everything in his considerable power to get her back. Hope knows that when word gets out that the old Duchess is back, this will mean trouble for Kelly and Nightfall Island, if their enemies think they can use her to get control back over the Island. So Hope uses an old ritual to make Kelly her older sister, and as such, the heir to the Dukedom. As Kelly was already her best friend on earth, she is glad to be real sisters now as well.

I liked Kelly and Saber in this book as well, they don’t hesitate to do what has to be done, and Kelly is tireless in invoking the Convocation of the Gods. Yes, I am repeating myself perhaps, but that bit is amazing and awesome. I have never read something like that before. She does accomplish her goals, of a nation free to worship whomever they want.

I did not expect the Katani to act like they did, and I admired Morganen for how he handled them. I think they can use a bit of humility. Even if they did not like loosing Nightfall Isle to the Corvis brothers, they should have helped rescue an innocent woman from a clearly mad duke Finneg. Morganen was the only one protecting the Queen during the magical battles, as she was not a mage. Those magical battles were fun to read too.

If you have read my interview with Jean Johnson last week, you know there will be more books and series set in this universe, and I am looking forward to reading them all.

The eight Son shall set them free:
Act in Hope and act in love
Draw down your powers from above
Set your brothers to their call
When Mage has wed, you will be all

I shall probably re-read this series again in a few years time, I do love the writing style and worldbuilding of Jean Johnson.

9 stars.

Jean Johnson – The Flame

The seventh book in the Sons of Destiny series, published December 1, 2008.
Genre: fantasy romance
Cover: I don’t like his head

Eight brothers, born in four sets of twins, two years apart to the day – they fulfill the Curse of Eight Prophecy. Though no longer trapped in exile, their growing family faces new problems. Now that it’s his turn to look for a bride, the seventh-born brother burns with curiosity and anticipation…

Koranen of Nightfall is tired of the Curse – in his case, a destructive flame that courses beneath his flesh. His brothers have wives and lovers, but all Koranen has are blistering reminders of a touch that burns … unless he can find a woman able to endure the literal heat of his passion. Then the Aquamancers arrive, at last affording Koranen the chance to find his Destined Bride.
Ostracized for being too good at her job, Danau is resigned to her punishment: never knowing love. But fire and water always create steam, and things do get steamy as Danau and Koranen gradually realize they were meant for each other - even as Nightfall’s future becomes flooded with more trouble than either of them could have imagined.

This is Koranen’s story, the seventh brother. Koranen is a Firemage, he literally burns. He can use his bare hands while making glass or working in his forge, and he even occasionally sleeps in it, so it can drain away some of his body heat. Before their exile, as a youth he tried to court a maiden twice, only to end up with his handprints burned into her body. And so Koranen is a virgin, unable to make love to a real woman. Until he can find that rare woman who will be Water to his Flame.
So when they find out, there is a whole city beneath the Ocean, where Aquamancers are in abundance, there is some hope for him. Especially when they want to study the workings of the famous Desalination plant on Nightfall Island, with the intention of reproducing it for their own city. Morganen has negotiated for some single marriageable female Aquamancers, so his brother can find his destined Bride amongst them.

Danau is not interested at all in the handsome Firemage, she knows she will never be able to touch a man. Her touch literally freezes a man, giving him frostburn on parts of his body he really doesn’t want to be frostburned. The first two ladies that Koranen tries to date, soon find out his secret Curse, but they really dislike Danau for some obscure reason and don’t tell him that she is the one for him. They just point him to the fourth of them. And as Danau keeps turning him down, Morganen needs to step in to make Koranen persevere in his pursuit of all the Aquamages.

Together Koranen and Danau find out the secrets of the Desalinator, and they will be able to repair it so it can work on full capacity once more, which is necessary as the Island’s population keeps growing and growing.

But the Aquamancers came not alone to Nightfall Island. Their Council decided to get rid of all the recent shipwrecked persons they rescued, and amongst them are some bad apples. They know about Rora, and try to get to her for their own selfish reasons. A good woman gets murdered because of that.
But there is also a Priestess amongst them, who will be crucial in their task to resurrect the Convention of the Gods.

Another book filled with action, magic and love. Both Koranen and Danau are lonely, they know they will not be able to make love to a real human being, because of their powers. They can’t be kept under control when feeling desire or other strong feelings. So when they finally find out about the other, they know they are Destined to be together. And so happy not to be alone anymore.

Both Koranen and Danau have thrown themselves into their work, becoming the best there is in their field. And they can admire that devotion in the other. Together their powers are even stronger than alone, and I do wonder what their future will hold. Perhaps there is some more in the new series, the Guardians of Destiny.

I totally disliked Danau’s cousin and friend, for the way they kept hurting Danau out of pure jealousy. They sure got what they deserved when Kelly judged them.

I just keep loving those books, and I think they will be re-read again in a few years time.

The Seventh Son shall he decree:
Burning bright and searing hot
You shall seek that which is not
Mastered by desire’s name
Water shall control the Flame

9 stars.
