Maya Banks – No place to Run

The second book in the The Kelly Group International series, published December 7, 2010.
Genre: romantic suspense

No place to run

Sam Kelly was her first love.
The last person Sam Kelly expected to pull wounded from the lake was Sophie Lundgren. Once they had shared a brief, intense affair while Sam was undercover, and then she vanished. She’s spent the last five months on the run, knowing that any mistake would cost her life and that of her unborn child – Sam’s child. Now she’s resurfaced with a warning for Sam: this time, he’s the one in danger.
Now he’s her last chance.
Sam has too many questions to let her slip away again – like why she disappeared in the first place. This time he vows not to be seduced. But one look in her eyes and the passion burns again, and Sam knows he’ll do anything to keep her and his child safe. However, Sophie’s dark past is more dangerous than he imagines, and the only way for either to survive is to outrun it.

Sam Kelly was working undercover in Mexico when he first met Sophie. She was working as a waitress in some sleazy café. But the spark between them was immediate, and they spend a lot of time in bed, and very little time talking. So when it was time for Sam to get in action, he never expected to see her again. But still, something made him go back to their hotel room, only to find her gone. It has been 5 months, and he still can’t stop thinking about her.
Sophie was not an innocent young girl. Her father is a very powerful illegal arms dealer, and he does not care about who he does business with. He also does not care about his daughter, and uses her as he sees fit. Sophie was send to spy on Sam and his team, and to find out what she could about him. Instead, she turned on the father she hates, and kills him. Sophie has been on the run ever since. Her uncle desperately needs the key to her father’s vault which she took with her. She never expected to be pregnant, and now she cannot keep running alone any more, they have found her. She needs to warn Sam, he and his family are in danger.

But Sophie’s luck has run out, the assassin has caught her. Shot and beaten she still manages to escape by pushing them both into the cold lake near Sam’s house. She needs to protect her child, Sam’s child! Half conscious she is discovered the next day by Sam, who is very suspicious of her sudden appearance back in his life. How did she know who he is, and where to find him? And she is pregnant, could it be his child? His brothers Garret and Donovan are none too happy either, but Sam protects her as well as he can. He is the only one allowed to doubt her, and he will take care of her and protect her. She is his.

Sophie is not sure how much she can trust Sam, and will he send her away when he finds out she has killed her own father in cold blood? And Sam knows she is holding back from him, so he allows her to be interrogated by his CIA friend. Ruining the trust he has build with her in the last few days. She will not be taking into “protective” custody by them, as she is totally expendable to them. It is her father and uncle they are after, and she is only a means to an end.

At the same time, Sam’s father gets a heart attack, and while in the hospital, his mother is kidnapped. Sophie’s uncle will exchange her for Sophie, and the key. Of course Sam doesn’t want to do that, but Sophie will not allow anything to happen to his mother. She only met Marlene once, but she likes her, and the caring and loving family she witnessed. Something she never knew could be real.

This book has grabbed my attention from the very first page, and did not let me go until I had read the last page. I loved it. Everything in it, the suspense, the plot, the romance, the characters. They have flaws, are insecure, but they will work it out, and not just because Sophie is pregnant. How much gushing can you take? All I can say is: if you like romantic suspense, please try this series, you will not be disappointed. It has totally brought back my love for the genre.

10 stars.
