Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls - with one tiny exception: they're products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird...
The Wird sisters are content to avoid the local vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region - until one of them blows up a vampire in self-defense. Everyone knows vampires aren't aggressive, and killing one is punishable by death. But soon more bloodlust-fueled attacks occur, and the community wonders: are the vampires of Tahoe cursed with a plague?
Celia reluctantly agrees to help Misha, the handsome leader of an infected vampire family. But Aric, the head of the werewolf pack determined to destroy Misha's family to keep the region safe, warns Celia to stay out of the fight. Caught between two hot alphas, Celia must find a way to please everyone, save everyone, and oh yeah, not lose her heart to the wrong guy - or die a miserable death. Because now that the evil behind the plague knows who Celia is, it's coming for her and her sisters. This Wird girl has never had it so tough.

I have seen a lot of posts and blog tours for this book, and the next of the series, and I was almost sorry I bought it. I just don’t like overhyped books; they tend to disappoint me, and I can never see why people are so excited about it. But in this case, I am really glad I bought the book, as I totally loved it. It is unique, it is fast paced, lots of action and four sisters I would like to be friends with.

The book starts, when the four sisters are lead in the Vampire Court, as they are accused of killing one of the vampires belonging to one of the most powerful vampires in the region. Their claims of self defense don’t matter much, but the vampires have a most unusual way of getting the truth out of witnesses. A very painful one. And when it is discovered that the vampire in question was suffering from chronic blood lust, they suddenly were free to go. Misha himself doesn’t seem as interested in the outcome of the trial, as he is in Celia herself. He can’t stop looking at her. He certainly has never met someone who could resist his charms, and say no to him. Which of course only makes him want her more. But Celia truly is not interested in Misha, no matter how gorgeous the man, or how rich and what he can do for them. She can take care of herself, thank you very much, and of her sisters. She has been doing it for years, ever since their parents died when they were way too young. They have no one else to rely on, but each other.

Four sisters, with four very different powers and personalities, but they are very close to each other. Celia is a shifter, she can change in her tigress at will, and back. But if she accidentally touches another animal, she turns into that species. Until she can relax enough to change back. She also has some other powers, which I won’t spoil for you.
Emme is the youngest sister, and a healer. She is a very gently person. Then there is Taran, who can control fire, and Shayna can transform objects into deadly weapons.

That day, out running along the beach of Lake Tahoe, Celia comes upon a pack of werewolves. And their leader certainly interests her, she can’t take her eyes off of him. And he of her, but he lets her run by without stopping her. Celia is not used to something like this, instant attraction, but she sure hopes to meet him again. Usually her gorgeous sisters are the ones who garner all the male attention, not her.

When it appears that the vampire’s bloodlust infection is not a single occurance, that more vampires suffer from it, like a virus, Misha asks for Celia’s help in finding out what caused it, and how to stop it, before he has to kill his whole family. Or get killed himself by the Council. Celia is reluctant, she doesn’t want to get involved, she needs time to think it over. And Misha should really stop sending those outrageous gifts to her and her sisters. She won’t be bought.

When going home alone after a bit of clubbing with her sisters, Celia smells fresh dead, and demands the cabby to stop. While she is investigating, she is attacked by some werewolves, and almost killed. Still, she does her best not to kill them, but only to incapacitate. Until their alpha appears at the scene, and orders them off. The man she saw at the beach, the one she is drawn to! He tells his pupils off, and what they should have done. Can’t they use their senses that Celia did not kill those women? Perhaps she is different, and they don’t know what she is, but that does not allow them to attack her! She is not immortal like they are, she could have been easily killed.

Aric insists on taking her home, and taking care of her dislocated arm for her. Which she appreciates, as she doesn’t think Emme is strong enough for that. But having seen what she saw this evening, she knows she will have to help Misha, and find out what is causing the vampires to fall into bloodlust. Before the streets of Lake Tahoe run red with the blood of innocents. Her sisters are so not happy with that decision, but they won’t let her go alone. They will fight with her. When Aric finds Celia at the vampires’ residence, he sure is not happy, and goes ballistic. What is she doing with that leach? Aric and Misha get into a fight, and both their people with them. Celia is only trying to keep herself and her sisters safe, and that is not easy when all the others are much stronger and faster than they are.
But Aric has no right to tell her to stay out of it, she knows how to fight, and how to protect herself. To her surprise, her sisters really seem to hit if off with some of Aric’s wolves, especially her sister Emme, the shy one, and one of the baddest men Celia has ever laid eyes on.

It will take all of them to find out what is happening in Lake Tahoe, and who is behind it.

Sealed with a curse is a fast paced book, lots of action and fights (sometimes gory!), lots of characters, but those characters are real, and likeable (or not). I thoroughly enjoyed it all. The original new world, the roles of the different supernatural species. Celia and her sisters are all working girls, working in the hospital as nurses, but in different sections. I liked that angle as well, they have to do their jobs first, and then go out to find out what is happening. And when trouble finds them at the hospital, the sisters’ powers sure are handy to cloud the humans’ minds.

I did get irritated with Aric for trying to get Celia to stay safely at home, when she is the one who finds out the clues, and she is also totally capable of protecting herself. She is a warrior herself, not a fragile flower. I know he doesn’t want her to get killed, but she can have a lot of damage. I really enjoyed the interaction of all 4 sisters with their particular wolves. And the gorgeous master vampire who is not used to being denied anything, sure learns a lesson here. The Wird Girls are not susceptible to his charms or riches.
I especially liked the scene on the girls porch, when Misha has arranged a luxurious dinner, and Aric shows up and just inserts himself between them. They are so jealous of each other. And Aric is so gentle to Celia when she accidentally changes into something else. Of course, it was totally ridiculous for a bunch of werewolves to bring life bunnies to a barbeque, thinking of killing and skinning them at the girls’ house …. Which woman would allow that?

I am very much looking forward to reading the next book, which is in the mail already. Of course there will be trouble in the future, as Aric is a purebred wolf, and won’t be allowed by his Elders to mate with Celia. But the enormous attraction, the sparks between them, is very real.

9 stars.

  1. Oh love that you enjoyed it so much. I just won this one and can't wait to dive in!

Unfortunately, I do know a couple of girls that would do that with the bunnies. No, I don't hang with them either. :P

    1. Hunting is less accepted here in Holland Melissa, though my father is a hunter. And I do enjoy what he cooks, but I will never kill one myself.

    1. Nope, she was not interested in the gorgeous vampire at all. Which I loved as he was so not used to being denied.

  5. Excellent review, Aurian! I've enjoyed reading it. I can't say that I've enjoyed this book though, some of the things pushed wrong buttons for me, but I think it's just me - sometimes I don't react well to some tropes in paranormal romance.
