Genre: YA urban fantasy
Cover: ok
In the small college town of Morganville, vampires and humans lived in (relative) peace - until all the rules got rewritten when the evil vampire Bishop arrived, looking for the lost book of vampire secrets. He's kept a death grip on the town ever since. Now an underground resistance is brewing, and in order to contain it, Bishop must go to even greater lengths. He vows to obliterate the town and all its inhabitants - the living and the undead. Claire Danvers and her friends are the only ones who stand in his way. But even if they defeat Bishop, will the vampires ever be content to go back to the old rules, after having such a taste of power?
Bishop is ruling Morganville now, and he has made Claire his evil pet. But the spell seems to be fading, and she can resist him if she tries really hard. Still, it has cost her her friends, and she is now living with her parents again. It is not something she is happy about. Her boyfriend Shane is in prison with his father, the crazy vampire hunter, Eve seems to despise her, and Michael has also been converted by Bishop to be his follower. Amelie is still missing and Myrnin seems happy to be where he is, but is also getting sicker from the vampire illness.
Still, Claire goes to college and she really likes to study and tries to keep it all together. Myrnin shows her the computer he has build years ago out of human flesh and wood, a vampire computer, and Ada is running the town. Ada does not like Claire though, and does not want to obey her like Myrnin wants her to. When something happens to him, Claire will have to take over.
With Richard Morrell as the new town mayor, his evil sister Monica is back in power as well, and is tormenting Claire again. But Eve’s brother is also still running loose, and he is working for Bishop of his own free will. But is he really the murderer, or is someone else behind it all?
Then Bishop wants to clean the town up, and Amelie will have to countermove that. Who will win?
You won’t believe it, but this is the first book in the series without a major cliffhanger! That sure was a nice surprise.
I really like Claire, Michael, Shane and Eve. They are close friends and have each others backs. I do hope Claire’s parents will relent on the Shane front though; she is 17 now and should be treated as such.
The plot keeps twisting and turning and I still can never predict what will happen next. I love this series.
8 stars.
