Lara Adrian – A taste of midnight

Midnight Breed series book 9.5 published December 2011.

A taste of midnight

A shimmering holiday gala lights up an ancient castle in the Scottish Highlands, but beautiful widowed Breedmate Danika MacConn feels alone in the crowd. Even among the friends and festivity of the Darkhaven celebration, she can’t forget her lost love, a fallen warrior of the Order. Her brief return to her mate’s homeland has become treacherous after rejecting the advances of a dangerous Edinburgh crime boss with a taste for blood sport.
As Danika seeks to expose the vampire and his dark trade, she discovers an unexpected ally in his forbidding, enigmatic henchman, Brannoc, a man who exudes heat, danger, and dark menace--and seems somehow achingly familiar. Bran has his own reasons for wanting to keep Dani out of his employer’s business . . . and his own secrets he means to keep buried. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a woman who tempts the wildest part of his Breed nature--especially when that woman is Danika MacConn, the one woman capable of bringing him to his knees.

A very short story, but a welcome journey back to the world of the Midnight Breed, warrior vampires and their breedmates.

Hero: Malcolm MacBain, a vampire seeking revenge on Reiver, a vampire crime lord, enjoying bloodsport. Malcolms young breedmate was kidnapped to be used in his games, and murdered when she fought back and wanted to escape.
Heroine: Danika, a breadmate with a young baby, who lost her mate of a few hundred years in a battle for the Order. She needs to recover, and is feeling very lonely
Secondary characters: Thane, another bodyguard of Reiver, or perhaps something more, and Reiver, the crimelord. Very evil and consciousles person.
Romance: hot
Plot: good, it takes place in the timeline of the rest of the series, but is also a stand alone novella, not having the warriors of the Order appear other than by telephone or mention
Heat-level: hot
Writingstyle: fast and good, as always
Summary: I enjoyed reading this, and it was just way too short. I am happy Malcolm and Danika both find love again, and they have known each other for centuries already. Some great action, and a nice introduction in this world if you are unfamiliar with it. I recommend this series. A good mix of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.
