Leashing the tempest

Dating a demon, defeating evil, running a tiki bar: Arcadia Bell is a great occult mage in many respects. But then there's the challenge of her boyfriend's arrogant teenage son...

Arcadia "Cady" Bell may have saved the Hellfire Club's children from a local bogeyman, but she and her Earthbound demon boyfriend, Lon Butler, now face a more disturbing problem: his teenage son's new demonic abilities. Jupe Butler can persuade you to do anything - or so he thinks. To test the limits of his newfound power, they invite the co-owner of Tambuku Tiki Lounge to be the teen's guinea pig during an afternoon boat cruise. But when an angry storm whips the Pacific into a frenzy and Jupe puts them all in serious danger, will Cady's magic trump a teenager's excess confidence?

I was very happy to win an ARC of this story on Twitter, as I really enjoy the Arcadia Bell series. I am very much looking forward to the third full length novel, which is slated for spring next year.

Lon has promised his 14 year old son Jupe and his girlfriend Cady a nice boattrip to relax, and perhaps shoot some pictures of dolphins and wales on the way. They have also invited Cady’s friend and collegue, Kar Yee, along for the trip. Jupe’s had a crush on her since he met her, and she has agreed to have Jupe use his newfound demonic powers on her. So he is doubly excited about the trip.
But something doesn’t feel good about the boat, the Captain is a sleazebag, and why is there a ward around the whole boat? What is it supposed to protect them from, and why? So when the captain falls unconscious during the storm, and the boat is fried with lighting, how will they defend themselves against the monster that has crawled on deck?

This was certainly a fun short story, and even a bit scary at times. Still, it was very surprising and I loved the ending. It is a nice knack of Jenn Bennett to make the reader think they know what will happen next, and twist that around and surprise them.
I do enjoy her writing style, fast and easy, and witty.
