Genre: epic Fantasy
Cover: I hate this one, my Dutch book has a nicer cover.
Set in the mysterious world of Kelewan, an exotic empire encircled by murder and magic and where formal courts mask deadly intrigues, a valiant girl leads her followers through terror and peril - and discovers her own womanhood
If I want a comfort read, a series I have read dozens of times already, and never bores but still captivates me and makes me emotional, it is this series. I do have the books in Dutch, as I read fantasy long before I discovered I could buy books in English too. I have no idea if the names I will use in this short review, are the English names or not, they are probably translated to a Dutch form.
I just love how the heroine, Mara of the Acoma, has to take over the leadership of her House, when her father and brother are killed. She is only 16 and wanted a life as a priestess in the temple of the Goddess Lashima, but faith has intervened. Her House is endangered brutally by a deadly enemy House, the Minwanabi. Mara needs more soldiers, but recruiting will be dangerous, and she will have to get protection from one of the other powerful Houses. But how to go about it? Tradition and the law are very strict in this world, and the Gods are very much present.
I love how strong and resilient Mara is, how she takes to the Game of the Council, the lethal game of Honor and Power the big Houses play. How she does what needs to be done, but also how she thinks outside of the box, and grows unlike other Tsurani. She marries a brute of a man to gain protection for her House’s second big enemy, but she does manage him as best as can be, and becomes a widow soon enough.
Have you read this series? Anything else by these authors?
10 stars.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenI only have it in Dutch, I don't think I want to read with other names.
VerwijderenI've only read a book by this author but I also really liked it, it was about faeries. I should try some others.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenRaymond E. Feist is a great fantasy author, I do have many of his books.
VerwijderenI have to be in the mood for a lot of epic fantasies, but I do get in that mood. He is on my must read list. I haven't yet. I also agree.. not too keen on that cover. :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEven though this series touches his main series, it could be read as stand alone, so you would only have to read three books in stead of thirty.
