Bella Andre – I only have eyes for you

The fourth book in the Sullivans series, published February 22, 2012.
Genre: contemporary romance
Cover: My book has the small cover, and it has not enough picture, and the words are too big. I would have enjoyed more of San Francisco and the fabled street cars. I do like the big cover better.

Sophie Sullivan, a librarian in San Francisco, was five years old when she fell head over heels in love with Jake McCann. Twenty years later, she's convinced the notorious bad boy still sees her as the "nice" Sullivan twin. That is, when he bothers to look at her at all. But when they both get caught up in the magic of the first Sullivan wedding, she knows it's long past time to do whatever it takes to make him see her for who she truly is...the woman who will love him forever.
Jake has always been a magnet for women, especially since his Irish pubs made him extremely wealthy. But the only woman he really wants is the one he can never have. Not only is Sophie his best friend's off-limits younger sister...he can't risk letting her get close enough to discover his deeply hidden secret.
Only, when Sophie appears on his doorstep as Jake's every fantasy come to life-smart, beautiful, and shockingly sexy-he doesn't have a prayer of taking his eyes, or his hands, off her. And he can't stop craving more of her sweet smiles and sinful kisses. Because even though Jake knows loving Sophie isn't the right thing to do...how can he possibly resist?

I was really looking forward to this book, after reading the last chapter in the previous one. Sophie “Nice” Sullivan was finally going to make the man she was in love with for decades, notice her as a woman. And he would fall hard. But, well, like I reviewed the Maya Banks book last week, this one has a one night stand with condoms been used and still the woman ends up pregnant. I now know for sure, I just don’t like that trope at all. When Jake leaves her alone in his bed in his rental house after her brother’s wedding, Sophie knew he was honest when he told her he was unable to love her, and she was ready to give up and move on with her life.
And now she is pregnant, and suddenly he wants to marry her and be there for her and their child. Or children. He has been in love with her for just as long, and he just knows he is not good enough for a Sullivan woman, due to his bad parentage. Sure, he is a self made very successful businessman with a chain of Irish pubs, but he is not worthy of her. Her brothers are over protective, they will kill him for even looking her way. They know he is not good enough for her.

So, Sophie just was too nice, and the attraction between them too much to ignore, so she gave in to his demand to spend a week with him to change her mind about marrying him. And yes, more sex is mandatory.

I just can’t like guys who are so unrealistic in thinking they are worthless when they have built a successful enterprise from the ground up with their own hands. Their employees like them, they have good friends. So where is the worthless part but in their low self esteem? This only seems to be connected to being in love with Sophie.

So, lots of sex, some misunderstandings, very long toes and not willing to share his past with Sophie unless she truly makes him.

I did like the wedding part, that was very romantic. I did enjoy the sneak peek’s into the lives of the other Sullivan’s, especially Lori, but this romance left me completely cold. I usually love the friends to lovers trope, but not this time. Sophie should have been able to win Jake over without the baby plot. I would have loved more insights in their respective jobs, and their daily tasks instead of being told a few little things. I did find myself skipping the sex scenes more and more, just skimming for the tiny bits of dialogue.

Yes, I will read the next book as I am pretty sure there will not be a pregnancy instead of dating again. It is still a well written book, with characters I usually would love, if it was not for this trope.

6 stars.

  4. Darn Aurian. Always sad when that happens. I'm really not a fan of the accidental baby leading to pulling them together either. I've read a couple and usually it just eh isn't quite enough for me. I haven't tried this one yet but it's on my list. Hopefully it'll win me over a bit more and the next one will cause some serious book love for ya :)
