Recommendations from Peggy for December 2013.

IIn order to bring some more variety to my blog, I have asked some of my bookish friends to tell about the books they have in the past month, and to give us a recommendation. Today’s post is made by Peggy from Belgium.

Peggy:

I have read 7 books and 4 novella’s in the past month, and the 3 books I enjoyed the most are:

1. Nalini Singh – Archangel’s legion

The one I can recommend to all Aurian’s readers is:

Nalini Singh – Archangel’s legion

Archangel's Legion photo n425442_zps5b9673f9.jpg

Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.
Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.
Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael's Tower under siege by enemy archangels.
Yet even as they fight desperately to save the city, an even darker force is stirring, its chill eyes trained on New York…and on Raphael. Rivers of crimson and nightmares given flesh, the world will never again be the same…

Last month was a month with ups and downs. I read one fantastic book, a few good books and some very bad books. I tried a few new writers but that wasn’t a success. I was really disappointed. But luckily, I was able to count on Nalini Singh to make up for the bad books.

I’m a huge fan of Nalini Singh. I really love her books. So when I found her new book in my mailbox, I was very excited.

Archangel’s legion is the sixth book in the Guild hunters series. A fantasy world where archangels, angels, vampires and humans all live together. Now that world is threated with bad things that are happening. Things that were never believed possible, until now.

We’re back in New York, the city where Archangel Raphael and Guild hunter Elena live. There are things happening there that aren’t suppose to happen, like angels falling from the sky, immortals vampires dying from a terrible disease and …. Things that could destroy their beautiful city. Now Elena and Raphael have to find a way to stop all this from happening before it’s too late. But that isn’t the only threat. All the archangels have developed new powers. Dangerous powers, even lethal powers in the hands of your enemies. Now when archangelic war is become more and more a real threat, it’s very important to know who the enemy is and who’s a friend.

But although many things are happening in the world around them, you also learn more about how the relationship between Raphael and Elena develop. Because how do you balance a relationship when you’re a guild hunter and your lover is an archangel with dangerous powers? How do you balance a relationship when you’re in angel’s years a ‘baby’ and your lover is an ‘old one’? I loved it that Elena isn’t afraid of Raphael or his powers and even when she’s afraid, that doesn’t stop her from standing up to him, to let him know that he’s not alone in this.
In the past Elena has learned how to be an angel and a guild hunter. In this story she has to learn how to be a good consort to Raphael, something that is new to her. But something that she has to be, in order to help Raphael and their people in these hard times. But trying to be a good consort isn’t that easy, especially when you have human friends and you can’t tell them everything.

The thing that I love about Raphael is that although he has great powers, he let Elena find her own way (or at least he tries it for most of the times). He respects Elena for what she is. A warrior and his consort.

In this story we also learned a little bit more about Elena’s father and his past. And we get to know more of Naasir (one of Raphael’s seven). I can’t wait for his story.

I really loved this story and I’m really looking forward to the next book.

Aurian: Thanks for the recommendation Peggy! As I am also a big Nalini Singh fan, and I have read this book, I completely agree with you. You can find my review here
I have also read the anthology you list as nr 3, but that was before my review writing time.
