No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…
As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, but she must now deal with the affairs of the Pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel, ancient being, with godlike powers.
As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend a gathering of leaders from Atlanta’s supernatural factions. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered by a shapeshifter, Kate is given less than twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dear…

Another amazing addition to one of my favourite urban fantasy series. With the Beast Lord away, Kate has to take care of a big problem herself. A shapeshifter is accused of killing one of the Masters of the Dead, and Hugh D’Ambray is the accuser. If Kate doesn’t give up the guilty person, there will be a war between the Pack and the Masters of the Dead and all the vampires under their command.
Kate is determined to examinate the crime scene, even though the body has been removed already. Pack politics will be troublesome, but Kate is determined not to give any of their own over to The People for justice. But first, they will have to get there, and that will be a problem as it is in the jurisdiction of The People. With the help of a chosen group of helpers, Kate set out on a strange hybrid animal into the strange and dangerous surroundings of Atlanta.
When things go from bad to worse, they seek refuge in the building of the Knights of Merciful Aid, but that was not the best choice ever. Betrayal happens, and people die.

A lot of things happen, things I won’t spoil because they will make you laugh and cry. And then Kate’s father takes an interest in her, and it is certainly not the kind of interest I had imagined. Neither has Kate. But I loved this book so much, and the ending was amazing. It makes me very happy for Kate and Curran and Julie and I can’t wait to read the next book. But I will have to.

10 stars.
