Jayne Ann Krentz – Twist of Fate

A stand alone novel, published in 1986.
Genre: contemporary romance.
Cover: This cover fits the book better, than the sexy one my book has.

Twist of Fate

Hannah Jesset was a determined young woman with a talent for guidance and an unusual inheritance. Gideon Cage was a jaded corporate raider with an eye for the deal and for the ladies - Hannah in particular. Going to bed with Gideon Cage had been perhaps the most important thing Hannah had done in her life. But her own words of warning came back to haunt her: Understanding a man didn't buy safety for a woman.

Hannah Jesset did not hesitate to search out Gideon Cage on his vacation in Las Vegas, to try to get him to back down from taking over her brother’s small company. As a guidance councillor, she has a knack to know what makes people tick, and how to advise them. And of course, he would never suspect her of cheating at cards to gain the upper hand. She also could not resist giving Gideon some free advice of her own. But the old adage is true here, be careful what you wish for…

To Gideon’s surprise, he could not get those words out of his mind. They were true, how ever much he did not want to acknowledge that. And he realised, he wanted to see Hannah again, and hear her advice, even though he has no intention of acting upon it. It was just refreshing, that is all.
But Hannah has other plans. Just having had a knee surgery after a bad car crash, she is heading out on vacation to Santa Inez, to pack up the library her famous aunt, Elizabeth Nord, has left her. And she will have to figure out what to do with her life, on her own. Hannah does not anticipate that Gideon would just go with her, but she is kind of resigned to it, when she sees him in the airport the following morning. He is not the kind of man to give up early.

But if they sleep together, will she be able to get over that? Or will it hurt too much when he walks away, and go back to his corporate life in Tucson? The path Gideon has chosen so long ago is cold and lonely, and he loves his company. There will never be enough room in his life for her. But still, she cannot refuse him her bed, when he tells her he needs her. And why shouldn’t she go for it? A no strings attached affair on a tropical island might be just what she needs.

But danger has followed Hannah, and Gideon is only just in time to safe her from a killer. Who is after Hannah, and why?

Okay, I figured out almost the whole book after a few chapters, but that did not make me enjoy it less. I just love Jayne Ann Krentz’ writing style, and the strong characters she creates. I liked Hannah from the start, confronting Gideon like that, while in so much pain from her bum knee. Of course, Gideon is a man used to getting what he wants in all things, so she might have gotten what she wanted, but Gideon did not lose anything in it. And so he allowed her to cheat on him. And when he decides, he wants Hannah, he won’t be denied either. Following her to Santa Inez was spur of the moment, and his staff is not happy about it. He is needed to fight the competition!

If you are in for a light read, with some fun moments and some light lovescenes, you should try one of Jayne Ann Krentz earlier books. Only a little bit of suspense to my tastes, but a really nice read.

7 stars.

  1. I sometimes love a light read that isn't to deep. This sounds like it would fit the bill perfectly for that type of read :)

    1. Hi Colette, JAK has been writing for such a long time, and you never picked up one? I really like her characters. But beware of the 80's books.

  5. I have some books by this author, I read one from time to time as you say. But still, I don't think I have this one. I think it's always like that with this author, we know everything from the start but as you say it's a great writing style.

    1. Hi Melliane, it is not always so predictable, but I do enjoy her writingstyle. And she has written so many books. I love her Jayne Castle books the most.
