J.R. Ward – Lover Unleashed

The ninth book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, published March 2011.

Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.
When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.
As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

I have read disappointed reviews and raving reviews about this book, and in the end I just had to find out for myself.
In the beginning I was a bit put of by all the cursing by the various parties. But getting deeper into the story, I became mesmerized. I did love the interaction between Manny and Payne, and did not feel like the rest of the storylines in the book made it less than it was. It all just came together. Yes, a huge part of the book is taken up by Vishous and his relationship with Jane, but in the end, everyone got better. And the big surprise in the end, with Manny and Butch, wow. Did not see that coming, although the comment about the taste of his blood …

The love triangle between Blaylock, Qhuinn and Saxton is still a bit heartbreaking, but I just know they will find their way out of it eventually.

Again the book is packed with action, fighting and passion. Some new and dangerous characters are introduced, and not only vampires. Helas, no info on the Lessers, only them getting killed, but nothing about the intrigue, the Omega. Also no sign of the Scribe Virgin, though she is mentioned enough by Vishous and Payne as being their mother. No sign of Thorment or Lassiter, so that plotline still is a mystery. But I guess if everything had to be mentioned, the book would be twice as thick as it already is.

And no, no recap this time, I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone. I am looking forward to the next book, which will be published in March 2012, Lover Reborn. So far, that will be a great month for reading new books …

  1. I was a bit disappointed in this book. I loved the side story lines but I had wanted more of Manny and Payne, instead it was more like Jane and V's story, and Manny and Payne were side characters. Generally though I liked how the story line is progressing.

  2. I am behind again! Two books to be exact but I just grew tired of the world and how Rhev's book was not all about him. But one day, one day

  3. @ Blodeuedd - I really liked Rhev's book. I thought Ward handled the challenge of making a drug dealer likable quite well. But it you didn't like all of the extras then you might have issues with LOVER UNLEASHED.

  4. The thing why I haven't read this one is that I don't wanna read about Manny and I think after JM's book I kind of think she can't top that. Hmm, perhaps when it's cheaper I will actually buy it.
