Recommendations from Maia for May 2014.

In order to bring some more variety to my blog, I have asked some of my bookish friends to tell about the books they have in the past month, and to give us a recommendation. Today’s post is made by Maia from Holland.

Maia:

Last month I've read seven books. I’m very addicted to a computer game named HayDay. That’s taken a lot of time. But I’ve read some good books by Celia Kyle and Leah Brooke as well.

My top three of this month is:

Shelly Laurenston – Bite me

Robin D. Owens – Ghost seer

Jenn Bennett – Bitter spirits

The one I can recommend to all Aurian's readers is:
Bite me by Shelly Laurenston.

Livy Kowalski has no time for idiots. When you shapeshift into a honey badger, getting through life's irritants is a finely honed skill. Until she gets stuck housing her nutso cousin and dealing with her dad's untimely and unexplained demise. That's where Vic Barinov comes in - or his house does. Vic can't step outside without coming back to find Livy devouring his honey stash and getting the TV remote sticky. It gets his animal instincts all riled up. But he'll have to woo her at high speed: all hell is breaking loose, and Livy is leading the charge...

I’ve read and loved Shelly Laurenstons books since I first discovered them in 2006. First there were only e-books. I didn’t have my cybook or iPad, so I printed them and made my own little books. I love the humor, the strong women, the hunky guys. She has the finest shifters. Even though there aren’t any bunny shifters! The best are the bear shifters, followed closely by the wild dogs. Hers are the only books I willingly buy in trade paperback. Over the years I bought all her books.

Bite me is another winner. It’s the last in the Pride series. She closes this series with a bang. It starts with the introduction, where she apologizes for the cover. It’s a pretty kitty. The art department couldn’t conceive “the wonder that is a grizzly-Siberian tiger male with a honey fetish and introvert tendencies”.
This sets the tone for the whole book. I laughed out loud for several times. It's a rare writer who can do that to me. A lot of authors can make me cry, but laughing is a lot harder. I loved Livy and her family and the way Livy and Vic react together.

It’s a pity she won’t write in this world anymore, but I’m consoled with the G.A. Aiken books and maybe she’ll get to finish the Hunting Season series.

PS If you like honey badgers after reading this book, you should watch this YouTube film about a honey badger Houdini here

Aurian: Thanks for the recommendation Maia! I have read and loved all three of the books. You addicted me to Shelly Laurenston’s world, and I made you read Ghost Seer and Bitter Spirits in return, so I am very happy you did enjoy them. So readers, with both myself and Maia recommending those books, have you read them? If not, what are you waiting for?

  1. I wasn't that blown away by Ghost seer, too much insta-love for me but I loved the Jenn Bennett book. I'm reading book 2.

    1. More insta-attraction, she did kick him out and I enjoyed that Melliane. But yes, I hope the second book is even better.

  2. I enjoy anything & everything that Jenn Bennett writes, so her new Roaring Twenties series is no different. I just finished Grim Shadows (book 2), and loved it. I thought Ghost Seer was an ok first installment, but the next one will be the deciding factor of whether or not I stick with it.

  5. I like the books of Shelly Laurenston but I haven't read all of her books. I still have to read a few. But they're good with a lot of humor.

  6. Shelly is always a good choice. She's my standard for shifter books. Can not recommend her enough! I've reread them so often I can quote pieces! When I'm sick or feeling blue I'll take her books with me to bed to read them again or favorite parts. But thats enough fangirl gushing. ;-)
