Genre: contemporary romance, with a dash of suspense.
The heat is on in Palm Beach-and Rick and Samantha are sizzling.
Samantha Jellicoe is no ordinary thief. At least, not anymore. She promised her significant other, British billionaire Rick Addison, that she'd retire from her life of crime. So no more midnight break-ins...no more scaling estate walls...no more dangling from the ceiling. From here on in, it's intimate dinners with Rick in posh Palm Beach followed by rock-your-world sex.
Who'd have thought that doing the right thing would turn out to be more deadly than her former life of crime? When the first client of her new security business is murdered, Sam is determined to find the killer. Now if only she can manage to stay out of jail, resist her former "associate's" lucrative job offers, and keep Rick from sticking his nose into her business, she might just manage to stay alive. Because trouble isn't just walking -- it's running -- to catch up with her.
Samantha is trying to start a legitimate security consultant business on her own, which is not easy. Her billionaire boyfriend Rick Addison is trying to make her go global instantly, and set everything up for her. Which is so not what she wants. She is still not sure going legit is what she wants, she misses the thrills of breaking and entering, and stealing priceless artefacts. She is a thief, and a good one! But to give their relationship a try, she needs to go legit. And so she forced her friend and fence and Walter (Stoney) to go legit with her. But she wants to do everything on her own, make it her own business, and not some other division of the Addison emporium. She also doesn’t want him to hussle up clients for her, she can find them on her own.
Actually she has a business meeting that same evening at some rich charity event. The client in question, Charles Kuntz, is very interested in hiring her services, as he is feeling very uncomfortable over something, and is afraid. She almost gets him to call the police, but then they are interrupted by Rick, and the start of the dinner. And before she can meet him again the next day, Charles Kuntz is found murdered in his own home, and his safe robbed. Sam is really disturbed about it, she liked the man. And as he would have been her very first client, she feels a certain obligation. If only she could have talked him into calling the police! So, she is determined to find out what happened, and who the murderer is. The police are not having a clue so far.
But there is also the ex-wife showing up. She is divorcing Peter, and has come to Richard for help. She wants to come back to Palm Beach, as this is where her friends are living, and of course, where Richard is living as well. She is certain she can win him back, after all, that mutt of a thief he is hooked up with for the moment can only be a fling. Rick doesn’t see it that way, and as he has the habit of being a knight in shining armour, he cannot resist her plea for help. Sam is not that happy with it, and she tries to make him see the truth behind it. Patricia even thinks that if she goes out stealing, that Rick might like that! Leaving Sam to clean up her mess, when she tries to blame Samantha for it. But Samantha uses it all to get some leverage over Patricia, as she finds out that Patricia has sort of hooked up with Daniel Kuntz, the son of the murdered man, and her own prime suspect. She will use Patricia to get acquainted with Daniel and his sister Laurie, because while Charles seemingly doted on his children, they sure are not the least bit heartbroken over his death.
I still love this series, even after reading it a few times. I had to laugh when I closed this book with a contented sigh, which is always a good thing. The book starts out so great, with Rick trying to tell Sam what to do, how to run her business, and making her stay in England with him for as long as he needs for his business. But she just takes of, leaving him mad enough to follow her on the next plane to the states. He really doesn’t want to loose her, but he has to give her some space, and he just needs to trust her.
He also totally does not want her to get involved in this robbery/murder case and tells her to let the police handle things. He even wagers with her they can find out the truth faster than she can in her own ways. Which is of course the wrong thing to do, especially if he decides to help the police using his own influence and money.
I very much enjoyed the ensuing intrigues and how they set about getting the truth. About Patricia, well, she certainly has the worst taste in men possible. But we also get to meet a really nice secondary character, Aubrey Pendleton. He is a professional escort, but also a very nice man who knows a lot about art and other stuff. I am looking forward to seeing more of him in the next books.
As always, Suzanne Enoch wrote a lovely novel, lots of action, lots of humor, the heat and love between Rick and Samantha is absolutely there. Great characters, both the main ones and the secondary and even the bad ones. I really would not want to meet Patricia, but I would love to eat a dinner made by Rick’s chef.
