Karen Marie Moning – Bloodfever

The second book in the MacKayla Lane series, published August 26, 2008.
Genre: urban fantasy
Cover: gorgeous, my copy is older and has a different cover, but still gorgeous.

Bloodfever

I used to be your average, everyday girl, but all that changed one night in Dublin when I saw my first Fae and got dragged into a world of deadly immortals and ancient secrets…

In her fight to stay alive, MacKayla must find the Sinsar Dubh - a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over both the worlds of the Fae and of Man. Pursued by Fae assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she cannot trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and irresistible men: V'lane, the immortal Fae Prince and Jericho Barrons, a man as irresistible as he is mysterious.
For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

This is not a story I am going to summarize, it would spoil much to much for those few people who have not yet read the series. Hard to believe perhaps, but of course I am also one of those “late to the show” readers. I did read the first book a few years ago, and had a hard time taking it all in. Fortunately, I have read so much since then, I had no trouble at all with this second book. Getting into the world again was also no hardship, as MacKayla summarizes everything quite nicely in the first chapter. I really enjoyed reading this book, and devoured it in one evening.

I liked Mac better in this book, she stands up more for herself, and holds her own. Of course, awful things happen to her in this book as well, and Barrons still doesn’t tell her anything he doesn’t want her to know and is his usual high-handed self. Still, he starts showing some “human” side (I really have no idea what he is, but he is not human!). New characters are introduced, and as I absolutely love her Highlander series, I am looking forward to more Christian MacKeltar. I enjoyed meeting Dani, and want to know more about the other sidhe-seers.

I will be reading the next books soon, to be ready for Iced. I like Karen Marie Monings writing style, her sense of humor, and her characters. Both the main and the secondary. There are some almost love scenes, some kisses here, but no more. And I do dislike and distrust V’Lane, for making Mac loose her mind time and again, trying to seduce her.

    1. Now I think about it Felicia, I also never cared much for Mac, I could not understand her decisions. I do like Dani though.

    1. Hi Melissa, I could stop reading for a while after the third book, but when you finish the fourth, you absolutely need the fifth book. So, make sure you have lots of reading time.

  5. I liked it very much too. Read the whole series back to back earlier this year. Mac isn't my favorite heroine, but the series is very event-driven, so exiting to read.
