Working for the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences, one sees innumerable technological wonders. But even veteran agents Braun and Books are unprepared for what the electrifying future holds...
After being ignominiously shipped out of England following their participation in the Janus affair, Braun and Books are ready to prove their worth as agents. But what starts as a simple mission in the States - intended to keep them out of trouble - suddenly turns into a scandalous and convoluted case that has connections reaching as far as Her Majesty the Queen.
Even with the help of two American agents from the Office of the Supernatural and the Metaphysical, Braun and Books have their work cut out for them as their chief suspect in a rash of nautical and aerial disasters is none other than Thomas Edison. Between the fantastic electric machines of Edison, the eccentricities of Ministry consultant Nikola Tesla, and the mysterious machinations of a new threat known only as the Maestro, they may find themselves in far worse danger than they ever have been in before...

A very intriguing story, taking place in America, with airships disappearing, crew, cargo and all. And with a very famous historical figure as the bad buy. A death ray, travelling through a portal, a car designed and build by Wellington that can fly and has a serious amount of weaponry on board. Lots of action, lots of danger, a hint of romance and two women who are interested in the same man. A lady priest who is also an assassin. The house of Usher, the Maestro and more. The Prince of Wales and his mother Queen Victoria play their own strange part. The ministry's clankertons have invented some fabulous new weaponry for our beloved field agents, and a corset acts as a bulletproof vest.

And then it ended in a cliffhanger and for a while I thought there was no book 4. But then I saw on the author's website they are actually working on book 5, but book 4 is not for sale at Bookdepository! So horrors or horrors, I had to ask my friend Freya to buy it for me from Amazon. And that means double the cost of the paperback with shipping costs. Sigh. But I really, really want to read book 4.

Yes, I enjoy this series a lot. It is surprising, full of action, gadgets, inventions, danger, bad guys and organizations, but most of all, two main characters I thoroughly enjoy to read about. The Australian Miss Eliza Braun, and the ultra English Wellington Books. They are falling for each other, and I like that.

9 stars.
